![]() Is it just the hot weather irritating him and making him dry or is it something more serious? He is also getting discolored spots on the top of his neck. When I adopted him, the shelter told me he had one of his saliva glands removed so he has a large scar on the underside of his neck. I have treated him for fleas and put moisturizer on him but he is scratching so hard there are large wounds on the under side of his neck and the hair is falling off. What is wrong? I think that your dog needs a physical examination and aspirate of this cyst so that you know what she has and what treatment is required. These can be variable in the way they look and the way they behave. The final likely skin cell mass is a mast cell tumor. Lipomas or fatty tumors can feel very soft and cyst-like so that is another possibility. A cystic apocrine gland cyst, which is a relatively benign sweat gland tumor, may be the structure you are feeling. It's also possible that this is an abscess from a puncture wound which would require antibiotic therapy and draining to heal properly. If there's inflammation, infection or cancer blocking the drainage that could cause a cystic structure to form. Is your dog spayed? The axillary lymph node is located in that area and lymphatic fluid from part of the mammary chain drains into that lymph node.
